Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and commonly appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. While it's most common in teenagers, acne can affect people of all ages.

What causes acne?

Several factors contribute to the development of acne:

  1. Excess Oil Production: Overactive sebaceous glands can produce too much oil (sebum), which clogs the pores and creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

  2. Dead Skin Cells: When not properly exfoliated, dead skin cells can accumulate in the pores, causing blockages that lead to acne.

  3. Bacteria: Certain types of bacteria may cause inflammation and infection in blocked pores, worsening acne.

  4. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations during puberty, menstrual cycles, or due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can trigger acne.

  5. Diet and Lifestyle: Certain dietary factors, stress, and lack of sleep can exacerbate acne.

What can you do for scarring?

Acne scarring is a result of the body's natural response to inflammation. There are several types of acne scars and treatments depending on the type of mark. Treatments depend on the level of skin the scar has affected, how much discoloration is left and how quickly you are looking for results.
