Birthmarks

What Birthmarks can you treat?

We can treat many birthmarks, however, our greatest experience is in surgical removal or certain moles and growths, laser and medications for hemangiomas and laser for port wine stains. The youngest person we have treated was 7 days old.

Congenital Nevi

Congenital nevi are a type of colored skin lesion, sometimes referred to as a birthmark, mole or beauty mark that are present at birth or develop shortly thereafter. These nevi occur due to an overgrowth of melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in the skin. They can vary in size, shape, and color. While most congenital nevi are benign and do not require treatment, larger or more concerning nevi should be evaluated by a Dermatologist, preferably someone who has experience with how these moles evolve in kids and adults. Treatment options for congenital nevi depend on size, location, and risk of developing into melanoma. Common approaches include monitoring the nevi for changes or surgical removal for cosmetic or medical reasons.

Hemangiomas

Check out Dr. Ladrigan’s informational video. Hemangiomas are growths made up of tiny blood vessels that typically appear and grow quickly between 1-3 months of age. While most Pediatric Providers will tell parents that the “lesion will go away”, some will leave a permanent mark behind: anything from some stretched skin to a sunken scar to tiny red vessels. In some areas, they are at high risk for bleeding, infection and causing pain that could limit sleep or growth and development. Some hemangiomas can grow in concerning areas, like pressing on an eyelid or eyeball, or sitting at the opening of the nose. For this reason, I like to recommend that every hemangioma be evaluated by Pediatric Dermatologist who is well versed in these vascular growths and will guide you towards the right decision for your baby and family. Treatment options for hemangiomas depend on factors such as the size, location, and potential complications associated with the growth. Treatment options we provide may include FDA approved oral medications for the treatment of hemangiomas, topical medications or laser therapy. Sometimes a combination of treatments is best. Check out out Before and Afters page for just a few examples of what could be possible if done early.

We have treated children as young as 1 week old. Check out our Port Wine Stain Before and Afters for just a few examples of what could be possible if done early.
